Key takeaways

  • Duolingo is the easiest place to start for free, and its Super plan comes with a one-week free trial, but we could not confirm a current US price from Duolingo's own site, so check the in-app shop.
  • Babbel's 12-month plan was listed at $8.95 per month ($107.40 billed every 12 months) on its prices page, and it offers both Mexican and Spain Spanish courses.
  • Rosetta Stone lists $19.99 per month or $13.25 per month billed yearly as $159, and that one price covers all 25 of its languages.
  • Pimsleur is the audio-first option: 30-minute lessons, a 7-day free trial, and a Spanish Premium plan listed at $19.99 per month on the US App Store.
  • Speak has the highest US App Store rating of the apps we checked (about 4.83), and it focuses on speaking out loud rather than tapping answers.

The best Spanish learning apps

There is no single app that suits every learner, so we sorted these eight by the way they teach. Prices and features below come from each company's own pages and the US App Store listings we checked in October 2026, and we say plainly when we could not confirm something. Store ratings change daily, so treat the numbers as a snapshot.

Duolingo

Great for: Free daily practice and beginners

Open duolingo.com
Pricing starts atSee website
Free tierYes
Duolingo website
duolingo.com homepage

Duolingo is where most people start, and the reason is simple: you can open it, do five minutes of Spanish, and close it. Its own page describes 100+ language courses and more than 500 million total learners, and the US App Store listing shows a rating near 4.7 from over five million ratings.

The free plan covers the learning content, but unlimited Hearts (the mistake limit) sit behind Super, along with no ads. Super offers a one-week trial and can be cancelled before the charge. There is also a Super Family plan for sharing a subscription. Duolingo's page did not show a price, and the App Store lists several Super options, so we have left the price as See website.

Our honest view: Duolingo is great for building a habit and basic vocabulary. It is weaker at open-ended speaking and at explaining grammar, so many learners pair it with a second app from this list.

Why it made the list
  • Free to use with a large Spanish course
  • One-week free trial of Super
  • Family plan option
Keep in mind
  • We could not confirm a current US price on its site
  • Free plan limits mistakes with Hearts

Babbel

Great for: Structured lessons with grammar explained

Open babbel.com
Pricing starts at$8.95 per month (12-month plan)
Free tierFree trial
Babbel website
babbel.com homepage

Babbel is built like a course rather than a game. Lessons are short, grammar is spelled out, and review exercises come back around. Its homepage offers Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (Spain) as separate choices, which matters if you care which version you learn.

Babbel's prices page showed a 12-month plan at $8.95 per month ($107.40 charged every 12 months) and a one-time lifetime plan at $299.99 when we looked. The US App Store listing shows a one-month plan at $17.99 and a three-month plan at $45.99. Babbel says signing up is free and you can try the first lesson of every course, with up to 80 free lessons depending on the language. Every plan includes all 14 of its languages.

The trade-off is cost and pace. A month-to-month plan is the expensive way to use it, and the lessons are more structured than playful, which some people find slow.

Why it made the list
  • Separate Mexican and Spain Spanish courses
  • Every plan includes speaking practice and grammar
  • Up to 80 free lessons depending on language
Keep in mind
  • One-month plan costs far more per month
  • No permanent free plan

Busuu

Great for: Learners who want feedback and a community

Open busuu.com
Pricing starts atSee website
Free tierYes
Busuu website
busuu.com homepage

Busuu mixes lessons with community features, and its Premium Plus tier adds AI conversation practice. Busuu's plans page compares a free tier, Premium and Premium Plus. Premium includes grammar and vocabulary review and removes ads. Premium Plus adds AI conversations, speaking practice with pronunciation feedback, specialty courses and Mistake Repair.

We could not read a price on Busuu's own page, and the App Store listing for Busuu shows a long and confusing list of purchase options, so we have left the price as See website. Busuu's help center says its prices vary by platform and promotion, and that there is a 14-day money-back guarantee on the first payment of a Premium subscription (not on renewals).

It suits people who want something between Duolingo's lightness and Babbel's structure, and are willing to pay for the speaking tools. The risk is paying for Premium when the part you wanted is only in Premium Plus.

Why it made the list
  • Free tier to start
  • Premium Plus adds AI conversations
  • 14-day money-back guarantee on the first payment
Keep in mind
  • Prices vary by platform and were not shown on the page we loaded
  • Best features sit in Premium Plus

Rosetta Stone

Great for: Immersion without translations

Open rosettastone.com
Pricing starts at$13.25 per month (billed yearly)
Free tierNo
Rosetta Stone website
rosettastone.com homepage

Rosetta Stone is the old name in language software, and it still teaches the original way: pictures and audio with no English translations. Its pricing page lists a monthly plan at $19.99 and a yearly plan at $13.25 per month, billed as $159. The subscription gives you all 25 of its languages, so the second language costs nothing extra.

The plan includes immersive lessons with the TruAccent speech tool, Chat Missions for conversation practice, 500+ flashcard sets and a Sapphire Studio for creating your own learning materials. Both Spanish (Latin America) and Spanish (Spain) are on the language list.

The catch is that immersion can feel slow if you like to see a grammar rule written out. We did not see a free trial on the pricing page, so check for current offers before you pay for a year.

Why it made the list
  • One price covers 25 languages
  • Chat Missions and TruAccent pronunciation tool
  • Latin American and Spain Spanish both included
Keep in mind
  • Monthly price is higher than Babbel's yearly rate
  • No free trial shown on the page we checked
Pimsleur logo
#5

Pimsleur

Great for: Learning by listening and speaking

Open pimsleur.com
Pricing starts at$19.99 per month
Free tierFree trial (7 days)
Pimsleur website
pimsleur.com homepage

Pimsleur is audio first. Each lesson runs about 30 minutes, and you speak your answers out loud, which makes it a natural fit for commutes and walks. Its Spanish course teaches Latin American Spanish, with speakers from Colombia and Argentina in levels one to three and from Mexico in level four.

Pimsleur's FAQ describes a 7-day free trial that opens all lessons in one language for the Audio-Only and Premium plans. The US App Store listing shows Spanish Premium at $19.99 per month and an All Access plan at $20.99 per month, and the site mentions courses starting at $150. Pimsleur's own page lists a Free Lesson as well.

The weakness is price and style. It is one of the more expensive monthly options, and there is little in the way of games or reading practice, so it works best alongside another app.

Why it made the list
  • 30-minute audio lessons you can do while driving
  • 7-day free trial
  • Latin American Spanish with speakers from several countries
Keep in mind
  • Costs more per month than most apps here
  • Audio-only tier leaves out some tools
Speak logo
#6

Speak

Great for: Speaking practice with an AI tutor

Open speak.com
Pricing starts at$17.99 per month
Free tierYes
Speak website
speak.com homepage

Speak is aimed at the part many learners avoid: talking. Its homepage describes a three-step method of learning phrases, practicing them and applying them in a conversation with the Speak Tutor, and it lists Spanish among seven languages. The site claims 15M+ downloads, and the US App Store shows a rating of about 4.83 from over 65,000 ratings.

The homepage invites you to start for free. On the US App Store, Speak Premium is listed at $17.99 per month or $83.99 for a year, and Premium Plus at $39.99 per month or $164.99 for a year. We could not load a pricing page on its own site, so confirm these before you subscribe.

Speak is a good second app for someone who already knows some vocabulary and wants to talk. The AI tutor is not a person, so it will not replace a conversation with a human when you are ready for one.

Why it made the list
  • Built around speaking out loud
  • AI tutor gives feedback
  • Highest App Store rating on this list
Keep in mind
  • Prices come from the App Store, not its website
  • Fewer languages than the big names
Mondly logo
#7

Mondly

Great for: Short daily lessons on a low yearly price

Open mondly.com
Pricing starts at$15.90 per month
Free tierFree trial (7 days)
Mondly website
mondly.com homepage

Mondly offers quick daily lessons, and its yearly price is among the lowest we found. The US App Store listing, titled for 41 languages, shows a monthly plan at $15.90 with a one-week free trial and a 12-month plan at $74.90. The listing shows a rating of about 4.73 from more than 33,000 ratings.

We have to be upfront about the limits of our check. Mondly's website showed a human-verification page when we tried to load it, so the price and trial details here come from the App Store listing and not from the site. We could not read its feature pages, so we are not describing how its lessons work.

If low yearly cost matters most to you, it is worth a look, but compare it against the Babbel and Rosetta Stone yearly rates above and read its own site before you commit.

Why it made the list
  • 12-month plan listed at $74.90
  • One-week free trial on subscriptions
  • Covers 41 languages
Keep in mind
  • Its site blocked our automated page check
  • Monthly price is high next to the yearly price
SpanishDict logo

SpanishDict

Great for: Learners who also need a dictionary and verb tables

Open spanishdict.com
Pricing starts atSee website
Free tierFree trial (7 days)
SpanishDict website
spanishdict.com homepage

SpanishDict started as a Spanish-English dictionary, and the learning course is built on top of it. Its Learn Spanish page offers lessons from beginner to advanced, interactive video lessons with native speakers and grammar lessons across verb tenses.

Premium is offered with a 7-day free trial. SpanishDict's Premium page lists translation tools for speech, images and documents, a Writing Coach, voice-recognition pronunciation lessons, a placement quiz, phrasebooks, cheat sheets and no ads. We could not see a current price on the web pages, so we have left it as See website.

This is a practical pick if you already read or write Spanish for work or school and want one app that doubles as a reference. It will feel plainer than the gamified apps, and the free version has ads.

Why it made the list
  • Dictionary, translator and Spanish course in one place
  • Premium includes voice-recognition lessons
  • 7-day Premium trial
Keep in mind
  • Premium prices were not on the pages we loaded
  • Less game-like than Duolingo

How we picked these

We looked for apps that teach Spanish today, are sold in the US and publish enough information to compare. For each one we read the company's own pages (home page, pricing page, help or FAQ pages where available) and the US App Store listing for ratings and in-app purchase prices. Where those sources disagreed or a page would not load, we left the price as See website and said so.

We did not run lessons ourselves, so we do not rate how well each app teaches. We compared published features, free options, trial terms and prices. We did not include ProMapRanker in any list, and nothing here is ranked by commission.

How to choose the right Spanish app for you

Think about what is stopping you, not which app is most popular. A learner who cannot stay consistent needs something different from a learner who understands Spanish but freezes when speaking.

Pick by learning style

If you need a daily nudge, Duolingo is the easiest to try for free. If you want rules explained, look at Babbel, SpanishDict or Busuu. If you learn by listening and repeating, Pimsleur is built for it. If your problem is speaking, Speak and Busuu's Premium Plus conversation tools target that.

Check the Spanish version

Spanish differs between Latin America and Spain in vocabulary and some grammar. Babbel and Rosetta Stone both list Mexico or Latin America and Spain separately, and Pimsleur's course teaches Latin American Spanish. Choose the one that matches who you will talk to.

Compare the yearly cost

Monthly prices are the expensive way to subscribe. Babbel's yearly plan comes to $8.95 per month, Rosetta Stone's yearly plan to $13.25, and Mondly's 12-month plan to $74.90 in total. Use a free trial first, then switch to a yearly plan only if you plan to keep going.

Use one app plus speaking time

No app replaces talking to people. Apps build vocabulary and habit, but conversation partners and tutors build confidence. Pair your app with a weekly chat, and use the money you save on a yearly plan for that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Spanish learning app for beginners?

Duolingo is the easiest free start, and Babbel is a good choice if you want grammar explained clearly. Both have beginner paths. Try the free options first and keep the one you open without being reminded.

What is the best app to learn Spanish fast?

No app can promise fast results, since speed depends on how much you practice. Apps built around speaking, such as Pimsleur and Speak, give you the most talking time per session. Daily practice of 15 to 30 minutes tends to beat long weekend sessions.

Is Duolingo good enough to learn Spanish?

It is a solid start for vocabulary and habit. Many learners add an app with stronger speaking practice or grammar explanations, such as Babbel, Speak or Pimsleur, once they finish the early levels.

Which Spanish apps are free?

Duolingo, Busuu and Speak offer free ways to start, and Babbel lets you try lessons for free. SpanishDict has a free dictionary and course with a paid Premium tier. Free versions limit features, so check what is locked.

Does Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone cost more?

Pimsleur's Spanish Premium is listed at $19.99 per month on the US App Store. Rosetta Stone is $19.99 monthly or $13.25 per month on a yearly plan on its own page. Both change prices from time to time, so confirm on the vendor's site.
